CHENNAI: Police arrested four men, including a driver, after a 24-year-old doctor was harassed and groped on a private bus from Tindivanam to Chennai early on Thursday.

The doctor, Shreya*, told police that two passengers seated behind her groped her. The bus crew refused to come to her aid even though this went on for three hours.

 "She repeatedly requested the driver to make the men alight from the bus, but he refused to halt the vehicle," an investigating officer said.

A passenger came to her rescue and informed the police control room. Police arrested the passengers, Guru Shyam and Saravanan, engineering graduates from Alangudi, their friend Shiva Kumar, an autorickshaw driver, and bus driver Gnanadurai when the bus reached CMBT.

In her complaint, Shreya said she shouted for help but the other passengers were reluctant to come to her aid or take on her tormentors. "Two passengers remonstrated with the men who were harassing me, but that did not stop them," she said. "One passenger finally called the police."

"Shreya, a doctor at Vellore Government Hospital, was coming to the city for an interview at a hospital in Avadi. She had boarded the bus from Thanjavur on Wednesday night," the officer said.

The nightmare began at 3am. Shreya was sleeping when she felt a hand around her body. She woke up and found that two passengers behind her were groping her.

She panicked and alert the driver, who sent her back to her seat, saying it was not unusual for a woman passenger to be groped while travelling by bus. When she returned to her seat, the two men continued to molest her even though she shouted at them.

Shreya again pleaded with the driver to at least switch on the lights, but he refused to, saying it would disturb the other passengers. After some time, a passenger realised that the men were continuing to molest the doctor and informed the police control room. A police team was waiting for the bus when it arrived at the Koyambedu bus terminus.

The two engineers had informed their friend, an autorickshaw driver, who was also waiting at the terminus to warn Shreya against lodging a complaint. Police booked them under Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act. They have been sent to Central Prison, Puzhal.
